Why this role exists: 

The creative industry is moving fast. AI, automation, and emerging tech are reshaping how content is made, scaled, and delivered. We're looking for a Creative Technologist Intern to join our Digital team and help us explore what's next.

This isn't a sit-back-and-observe internship. You'll be embedded in an incubator-style environment where you'll research, prototype, and contribute to real production work. If you're the kind of person who sees a new tool and immediately thinks "what could I make with this?", this is your role.

What you’ll do

Prototype & Build

  • Develop working prototypes and proof-of-concepts that explore how emerging tech can enhance creative production
  • Move quickly from idea to build. Test, learn, iterate, repeat
  • Design with scale in mind. The things you build should have the potential to grow beyond a demo

Explore AI & Automation for Creative

  • Experiment with generative AI tools (image, video, text, code) and evaluate how they fit into real creative workflows
  • Build lightweight tools, templates, or integrations that make AI more accessible for non-technical teams
  • Identify opportunities to automate repetitive creative processes without losing craft or quality
  • Stay hands-on with the WPP Open platform and explore how AI can amplify creative output at scale

Research & Trend Scout

  • Track emerging creative tech (tools, platforms, techniques) and bring insights back to the team
  • Produce "art of the possible" demos or presentations that showcase new opportunities
  • Benchmark what leading brands, agencies, and tech companies are doing with creative technology
  • Translate research into actionable ideas the team can explore or build on

The Incubator

Think of this internship as a 16-week sprint. You'll work closely with our Creative Technologist and Digital team, roughly following this structure:

  • Weeks 1-4: Immerse. Learn the landscape, tools, workflows, and identify opportunity areas
  • Weeks 5-10: Explore and build. Dive into research, prototyping, or live production work depending on where the biggest opportunities are
  • Weeks 11-14: Deepen. Continue building on what's working, whether that's a prototype, a research output, or hands-on production support
  • Weeks 15-16: Share. Present your learnings, work, and recommendations to the team

This is a guide, not a rigid plan. The shape of your internship will depend on the work pipeline and what we uncover together. Some weeks you might be deep in research and exploration. Others you might be hands-on with live production work. What matters is that you're learning, contributing, and pushing things forward.

What we’re looking for

Final year, or recent graduate in: Computer Science, Creative Technology, Digital Media, Engineering, or related fields

You should bring:

  • A creative mindset. You see tech as a tool to solve problems and make a difference
  • The ability to pick things up fast. New tools, new platforms, new ways of working. You figure it out and get moving
  • Natural curiosity about AI, generative tools, and emerging creative technology
  • The confidence to prototype fast, fail fast, and learn fast
  • Resourcefulness. You don't wait to be told what to explore or how to solve something
  • Strong communication skills. You can explain what you've built and why it matters

Nice to have:

  • Coding experience (Python, JavaScript, or similar) to supplement your builds and prototyping
  • Experience with generative AI tools or APIs (e.g., OpenAI, Midjourney, Runway, Stable Diffusion)
  • Familiarity with front-end frameworks, creative coding, or no-code/low-code platforms
  • Understanding of automation concepts (APIs, data pipelines, workflow tools)
  • A portfolio, GitHub, or any evidence of things you've built or experimented with
